Kairi actually enjoyed it this time and had lots of fun. Last time we tried to have her get in, she just cried and wanted to get out. I turned the heat down so it was just warm for the kids.

Christmas

Posted By: Allie
Dec 26th, 2011

Christmas this year was fantasic! Kaden and Kairi were so excited for everything. Kaden got a bike and spiderman helmet and Santa surprised Kairi(and me) with a HUGE doll house. We had talked about getting her one for her birthday, but Jared bought it sometime before christmas and just kept it a secret, even from me.  He also had a few other surprises for me that i've been wanting for some time now. This man is THE BEST!

We spent most of the morning assembling their new toys. Kaden's favorite gift is his bike and remote control car, and Kairi loves her Tinkerbell and doll house.

Christmas Eve

Dec 26th, 2011

On Christmas Eve we visited family and celebrated Gram's birthday. We decorated cookies for santa, attempted making homemade snowglobes with a lot of trial and error, and then the kids had a gift exchange. Kaden got an airplance and Kairi got a mickey mouse coloring book, which they both loved. Until Kairi found out that Kaden got the airplane and then she got sad because she wanted one too. She LOVES airplanes and helicopters, but she also loves mickey mouse clubhouse...she just wanted both.

Exploded pipe

Posted By: Jared
Dec 19th, 2011
So last week I went over to my parents house to try and replace the starter in my Jeep with the new one and as I opened the shop door, there was lots of noise. I turned the light on and saw a huge mess from a pipe that burst in the ceiling. The insulation was sopping wet and was tough to dig through because there were bolts and car parts everywhere underneath it all that I tried to find so it didnt get thrown away.

50 Rules for Dads of Daughters {by Michael Mitchel

Posted By: Allie
Dec 2nd, 2011
I came across this "list of rules" one day and just had to repost it on here. It really made me think about growing up with my dad and the special memories I have spending time with him.

1. Love her mom. Treat her mother with respect, honor, and a big heaping spoonful of public displays of affection. When she grows up, the odds are good she’ll fall in love with and marry someone who treats her much like you treated her mother. Good or bad, that’s just the way it is. I’d prefer good.

2. Always be there. Quality time doesn’t happen without quantity time. Hang out together for no other reason than just to be in each other’s presence. Be genuinely interested in the things that interest her. She needs her dad to be involved in her life at every stage. Don’t just sit idly by while she add years to her… add life to her years.

3. Save the day. She’ll grow up looking for a hero. It might as well be you. She’ll need you to come through for her over and over again throughout her life. Rise to the occasion. Red cape and blue tights optional.

4. Savor every moment you have together. Today she’s crawling around the house in diapers, tomorrow you’re handing her the keys to the car, and before you know it, you’re walking her down the aisle. Some day soon, hanging out with her old man won’t be the bees knees anymore. Life happens pretty fast. You better cherish it while you can.

5. Pray for her. Regularly. Passionately. Continually.

6. Buy her a glove and teach her to throw a baseball. Make her proud to throw like a girl… a girl with a wicked slider.

7. She will fight with her mother. Choose sides wisely.

8. Go ahead. Buy her those pearls.

9. Of course you look silly playing peek-a-boo. You should play anyway.

10. Enjoy the wonder of bath time.

11. There will come a day when she asks for a puppy. Don’t over think it. At least one time in her life, just say, “Yes.”

12. It’s never too early to start teaching her about money. She will still probably suck you dry as a teenager… and on her wedding day.

13. Make pancakes in the shape of her age for breakfast on her birthday. In a pinch, donuts with pink sprinkles and a candle will suffice.

14. Buy her a pair of Chucks as soon as she starts walking. She won’t always want to wear matching shoes with her old man.

15. Dance with her. Start when she’s a little girl or even when she’s a baby. Don’t wait ‘til her wedding day.

16. Take her fishing. She will probably squirm more than the worm on your hook. That’s OK.

17. Learn to say no. She may pitch a fit today, but someday you’ll both be glad you stuck to your guns.

18. Tell her she’s beautiful. Say it over and over again. Someday an animated movie or “beauty” magazine will try to convince her otherwise.

19. Teach her to change a flat. A tire without air need not be a major panic inducing event in her life. She’ll still call you crying the first time it happens.

20. Take her camping. Immerse her in the great outdoors. Watch her eyes fill with wonder the first time she sees the beauty of wide open spaces. Leave the iPod at home.

21. Let her hold the wheel. She will always remember when daddy let her drive.

22. She’s as smart as any boy. Make sure she knows that.

23. When she learns to give kisses, she will want to plant them all over your face. Encourage this practice.

24. Knowing how to eat sunflower seeds correctly will not help her get into a good college. Teach her anyway.

25. Letting her ride on your shoulders is pure magic. Do it now while you have a strong back and she’s still tiny.

26. It is in her nature to make music. It’s up to you to introduce her to the joy of socks on a wooden floor.

27. If there’s a splash park near your home, take her there often. She will be drawn to the water like a duck to a puddle.

28. She will eagerly await your return home from work in the evenings. Don’t be late.

29. If her mom enrolls her in swim lessons, make sure you get in the pool too. Don’t be intimidated if there are no other dads there. It’s their loss.

30. Never miss her birthday. In ten years she won’t remember the present you gave her. She will remember if you weren’t there.

31. Teach her to roller skate. Watch her confidence soar.

32. Let her roll around in the grass. It’s good for her soul. It’s not bad for yours either.

33. Take her swimsuit shopping. Don’t be afraid to veto some of her choices, but resist the urge to buy her full-body beach pajamas.

34. Somewhere between the time she turns three and her sixth birthday, the odds are good that she will ask you to marry her. Let her down gently.

35. She’ll probably want to crawl in bed with you after a nightmare. This is a good thing.

36. Few things in life are more comforting to a crying little girl than her father’s hand. Never forget this.

37. Introduce her to the swings at your local park. She’ll squeal for you to push her higher and faster. Her definition of “higher and faster” is probably not the same as yours. Keep that in mind.

38. When she’s a bit older, your definition of higher and faster will be a lot closer to hers. When that day comes, go ahead… give it all you’ve got.

39. Holding her upside down by the legs while she giggles and screams uncontrollably is great for your biceps. WARNING: She has no concept of muscle fatigue.

40. She might ask you to buy her a pony on her birthday. Unless you live on a farm, do not buy her a pony on her birthday. It’s OK to rent one though.

41. Take it easy on the presents for her birthday and Christmas. Instead, give her the gift of experiences you can share together.

42. Let her know she can always come home. No matter what.

43. Remember, just like a butterfly, she too will spread her wings and fly some day. Enjoy her caterpillar years.

44. Write her a handwritten letter every year on her birthday. Give them to her when she goes off to college, becomes a mother herself, or when you think she needs them most.

45. Learn to trust her. Gradually give her more freedom as she gets older. She will rise to the expectations you set for her.

46. When in doubt, trust your heart. She already does.

47. When your teenage daughter is upset, learning when to engage and when to back off will add years to YOUR life. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

48. Ice cream covers over a multitude of sins. Know her favorite flavor.

49. This day is coming soon. There’s nothing you can do to be ready for it. The sooner you accept this fact, the easier it will be.

50. Today she’s walking down the driveway to get on the school bus. Tomorrow she’s going off to college. Don’t blink.

Cranberry Bliss Bars

Posted By: Allie
Nov 27th, 2011

BLONDIE LAYER:
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) salted butter, cubed
1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar
2 large eggs
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup dried cranberries
6 ounces white baking chocolate, coarsely chopped (I used vanilla almond bark)

FROSTING:
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
6 ounces white baking chocolate, melted
1/2 cup dried cranberries, chopped

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 13x9-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.

2. Prepare the blondie layer: In a medium bowl, melt butter for one minute in the microwave; stir in brown sugar. Scrape the butter & sugar into a large bowl and let cool to room temperature. Use an electric mixer to beat in the eggs and vanilla. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon; gradually add the dry mixture to the butter mixture. Stir in the cranberries and chopped chocolate (the batter will be thick).

3. Spread the blondie batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 18-21 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean (do not overbake). Cool completely on a wire rack.

4. Prepare the frosting: In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the cream cheese and powdered sugar until well-blended. Gradually add half of the melted white chocolate; beat until blended. Frost brownies. Sprinkle with cranberries. Drizzle with remaining melted white chocolate. Cut into bars- square or triangle-shaped. Store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Caramel Stuffed Apple Cider Cookies

Posted By: Allie
Nov 9th, 2011

1 cup softened butter

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 box (7.4 oz) Alpine Spiced Apple Cider Instant Original Drink mix -not sugar free- all 10 packets (I found this in my grocery store near the hot chocolate mixes.)

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

3 cups all purpose flour

1 bag Kraft Caramels (14 oz)

Preheat oven to 350° F. Line cookie sheets with parchment. (You really need the parchment!)

In a small bowl whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon.

With your mixer (or an energetic spoon) cream together butter, sugar, salt and all 10 packages of apple cider drink mix powder, until light and fluffy.

Beat in eggs, one at a time. Add vanilla and mix well.

Gradually add flour mixture to butter/egg mixture. Mix until just combined.

Refrigerate for about an hour. (If you're really impatient you don't have to do this, but it makes it so much easier to work with.)

When you are ready to bake, unwrap your caramels.

Scoop out cookie dough ball about the size of a walnut. (I used a rounded cookie scoop-full. My scoop holds about a Tablespoon.)

Flatten the ball of dough slightly in the palm of your hand. Press the unwrapped caramel into the center of your dough and seal the dough around it, covering it completely. Place on parchment covered cookie sheets 2 inches apart.

Bake 12-14 minutes, or until very lightly browned around the edges. Please don't over-bake! Once the cookies are done, slide the parchment off of the baking sheet right out onto the counter. Allow cookies to partially cool on the parchment. When cookies are cool enough to be firm but still slightly warm, carefully twist off of parchment and allow to finish cooling upside down (either on the parchment or on a rack.) If you forget about them and they cool too much and stick to your parchment, put them into the freezer for a few minutes and they'll pop right off.

Yield: about 4 dozen, depending on how large you make your cookies (or how many caramels have been snitched out of your bag before you begin.) Store in an airtight container.

Backup your data!

Posted By: Jared
Oct 18th, 2011
This is a reminder to keep your important files backed up such as pictures, music, documents etc.  Hard drives are fairly cheap for a good size and will be worth the investment to get one.  Over time hard drives will fail, so you need a plan in place to keep from losing very important data.  One of our drives started having issues in our server and I did not think too much about it until yesterday.  It stopped showing up in windows and I could no longer gain access to the drive. This drive had our music, pictures, programs, personal files and phone apps / games.  I had luckily made a backup of our personal files and pictures back in March, so any pictures since then are now gone forever.  I am very happy that I at least made the backup back in March, but should have kept up to date on the backup so we didnt have to lose as much.  None of my music was backed up so it is now all gone.

I do not want this same thing to happen to anyone else especially if you do not have ANY backups at all.  If you can pull together an extra $100 or so to get a backup drive and possibly some blank dvd's then please do so ASAP and ask me if you need help backing up your information.  Its a good idea to backup your information on a seperate drive, but also make some dvd backups.

What would you do with 1 million dollars?

Posted By: Jared
Sep 30th, 2011
So lately I have been working on SOOO many websites, trying to create something that will get big and bring in lots of money.  I am not sure how many of you know all the sites i've got going on but there is http://SpiffyNetwork.comhttp://SpiffyDirectory.com, http://CrochetNetwork.com, http://Spiffy360.com, http://SpiffyCovers.com, http://SpiffyConnect.com, http://RememberByHeart.com (Having a hard time getting this one going, so for now it links to allies site), http://GameNightGroups.com, http://Triptows.com, http://CrochetByAllie.com and http://SwarmInform.com

Lately I have been adding new features on Allies crochet site such as a coupon system and party registration and trying to finish Swarm Inform.  The Swarm Inform website is the one in my eye to bring in some money because i'm working on it with some guy at my work that does SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and he is going to help market and promote the site. It will be a social tool to help handle and maintain your social networks like twitter and facebook.  I am sure lots of companies will be interested in it and we have a nice layout and theme going with it.

Anyway, with our recent car purchase, our budget has been tight and I always think to myself what it would be like to get a million dollars from my websites.  This is what I would do.... Pay off all our bills and house mortage and pay back anyone that we owe money to, then I'd go out and buy $1,000 in groceries for each of my sisters and my brother and maybe $2,000 for my parents :), after that I would take my family out somewhere fun to eat like Chuck E Cheeses and go on a trip to Disney Land or Disney World.  I would then take all my friends out to eat somewhere nice, go bowling and then to a movie.  Whatever was left after that would go in our bank account.

I am interested to see what others would do, so if you happen to read this and it gets you thinking, please post in the comments what you would do with 1 million dollars.

If we had that much money I'd also pay off all of our bills and do some home repair, set some aside for our kids for college and whatever else. Then give other family members a share to do whatever they wanted with it. I don't know how much would be left after that, but I'd like to have a fun family vacation and whatever's left would go into saving.
Jamie Wrote: Oct 5th, 2011
Wow wouldn't that be great!! I would pay off my house. Put money in each of my kids savings accounts, give my siblings money and my parents and have all of us go to Disneyland for a week!! Then put the rest in savings.
Heather Wrote: Oct 17th, 2011
That's funny I think about it ALMOST every night...I would Buy Jed a new Truck and Me a nice SUV. Then pay off the house. (All without anyone knowing, even Jed) I would put a big bow on Jed's truck and put it in the garage, Then I would take mom, dad, you, Jamie, and Jason to a very expensive steak house. I would then give everyone an envelop with a large sum of cash ($1000-$2000) I would go to Hawaii and pay for mom and dad to come. I would get a fence and invest in some forms and other items for Jed's concrete business, I would also finish my basement, put money in my kids account, and some in our savings. Maybe even build Jed a shop!!! Haha like I said I think about it A LOT!!!
New car

Posted By: Jared
Sep 27th, 2011
With time flying by and Kaden needing to go to preschool soon, we decided that we needed to get a car so allie has something to drive while I am at work.  My friend, Shawn, has a Nissan 300zx and a bunch of parts for it and knows about the car so I figured this would be a good car to get.  We looked everywhere and even drove up to Ogden looking around for a good one. Finally we found one listed in the wrong section of ksl and it was local too!  After work, me and Shawn went to go look at it and see if it was worth buying. We gave him an offer and then left to think about it and if it was worth what he was asking. A few days had passed and I sent him an email asking if he had sold it yet and gave him another offer which he decided to go for.

The car is a blast to drive and it has 4 seats which is great since we have 2 kids.  There were a few small issues like a blinker bulb that was out, the driver side mirror was taped on and the driver seat was all torn up.  These were easily fixed, but we do need new front tires for it which will be a bit more expensive so we are looking around for some cheap ones. They are 15's and have 4 lug nuts in case anyone finds any around :)

The BEST Creamed Corn

Posted By: Allie
Sep 8th, 2011

1/2 cups Heavy Whipping Cream

1/2 cups Milk

1/2 teaspoons Salt

1 Tablespoon Sugar

16 ounces, weight Frozen Whole Kernel Corn (sweet If Possible)

1 Tablespoon Butter

1 Tablespoon All-purpose Flour

⅛ teaspoons Black Pepper

In a large pan on medium high heat, add heavy cream, milk, salt and sugar. Stir to combine. Bring to a boil and add frozen corn. Bring to a boil again.

In a separate small sauce pan, melt butter and add flour. Stir to combine.

Add flour and butter to the corn and stir to combine. Reduce heat to medium and cook until it begins to thicken. Turn off heat, add black pepper and season to taste.

Note: this recipe can be doubled.

I can't remember ever having creamed corn until I met Jared. He would have me buy the canned "creamed corn" and I never really cared for it. I came across this recipe and thought I'd give it a try. Let me tell you...it is THE BEST. If you do buy the canned creamed corn, you will NEVER want to buy it again. ...though it may be cheaper. Some things though, you just can't subsitute, and I will never settle for the canned stuff again now that I have this recipe. Kairi has never liked corn so she didn't want to try it, but Kaden would have eaten the entire batch if i'd let him.

My Pet Spider

Aug 18th, 2011
There is a spider outside my window at work that comes out in the morning until about noon, then it crawls off to the side until the next day.  I have been trying to figure out what kind of a spider it is and today I determined it is a cobweb spider.  At first it creeped me out and still kind of does, but I am starting to get used to it and look forward to seeing it the next day.  I want to see a big bug get caught in the web, but there doesn't seem to be many big ones around here.  I recorded some video of it with my phone when it was crawling down to eat a bug.

Lip Surgery

Posted By: Allie
Aug 12th, 2011

So we got back from our little trip last night and Kaden has been doing great. We flew out there Wednesday morning and was a little early so we had lunch in the cafeteria. And then went to our check-in appointment where we had to wait around for 3 hours to see various people. That was soo boring, but Kaden was very good through-out the whole wait. He found ways to stay entertained.

They then took us to our room, which was just like a hotel room. Kaden put his sunglasses on and started doing a silly dance. We had a nice view from our room.

They had a game room full of toys and things to do, so we played in there for a few hours. And they brought in some free pizza for everyone staying there and had an activity. There was a little boy Kaden's age that was there for a surgery and they became good friends for the evening.

After a restless night we woke up at 5 the next morning and Kaden watched some tv for a little bit before we went to get checked in for surgery. They brought us into the room he'd be in while waiting to fully recover. Once Kaden got a look at the bed and all the things around it I think it hit him and he started getting nervous. He grabbed me tight and told me he didn't want to have his surgery.

He stayed pretty calm while they checked his vitals, and then told him he could pick out a toy from their toy room. They gave him some medicine to calm him down and make him drowsy.

When it came time to change into his gown, that's when things got hard. They tried giving him a nebulizer treatment before going in, he put up a good fight and gave me a good kick in the throat, he just wasn't going to have it. It made it really hard for me seeing how bad he didn't want to go through with it.

We walked up to the surgery area and the medicine started kicking in and he became a lot more accepting. I told him how much I loved him and everything was going to be ok. He wobbily lifted up his head to look at me and told me he loved me too. Then I handed him off to the nurses and went back to his room to wait.

After a couple of hours they called me up to the recovery room so I could be there when he awoke. He would barely open his eyes when I talked to him and then fall back asleep. We took him back to his room and he started waking up more and then started touching around his lip. He didn't cry at all, he just said he didn't want it.

He drank some juice and watched some tv while we waited. After looking him over one last time, they said we could leave by noon. So only a few hours after the surgery we were ready to go.

We got a ride back to the airport where we had to wait till 6:45 for our plane home. He was pretty good most of the time, though he did throw big fit once, we just watched movies on our dvd player and played games on the DS. One of the store clerks gave him a free doughnut to cheer him up when we were buying a drink. He was pretty excited about that, so we watched Tangled and he ate his doughnut. He fell asleep on the plane before we left the ground.

And today he woke up just like every other morning and is being his usual happy self. He doesn't even act like anything happened.

Museum of Ancient Life

Posted By: Allie
Aug 3rd, 2011

Myndi invited us to go to Thanksgiving Point with her for their $2 Tuesdays this month. Who could pass up that deal? Kaden wanted to see the dinosaurs so we went to the museum. I think a lot of other parents had to same idea because it was super crowded.

We went to the science area first, they had a lot of fun playing with the different things. When we went to see the dinosaurs Kaden just LOVED it, he couldn't see everything fast enough we had to keep telling him to slow down.

Kairi was very interested in everything too, but with the sound effects they had going I think she was a bit nervous that something might come to life so she wanted me to carry her most of the time.

Kaden had fun with this Design-a-Dino. Kairi wanted to play with the dinosaurs on this matt, but Kaden didn't want to take the time to play with her. He saw the computers they had and; of course, kept asking to play on them.

Kairi isn't so sure about this dino.

This fossil digging area was soo crowded with kids it was insane. But I let Kaden and Kairi go in anyway. Kairi wanted out after a minute, I think it was too overwhelming for her. Then another rush of kids came in so it was time to leave. It was a lot of fun, can't wait to go again.
